kinkead's

foggy bottom

washington, d.c.

smackers.

noteworthy.  cozy atmosphere in upscale mini-mall located in the heart of foggy bottom.  sous-chef competed in prestigious french competition this year and didn't win; but the seafood is still fresh and tasty.  march 16th:  we had champagne, fried clams, grilled squid, roasted scallops, rockfish, mud-pie, $215.  affirmed my belief that kinkead's offers the best continental seafood in d.c.

interesting.  affordable fixed price sunday brunch with appetizer, entree, and dessert.

snob appeal.  medium to high.  kinkead's is a reputable restaurant well-known here in washington, d.c.  make reservations!

patrons.  businessmen with their expense accounts, couples who have been going here for years, politicians, and me

mackdaddy.  know how to use your utensils and you'll be fine.

is it going to hurt?  yes, but it won't prevent you from buying meat at the supermarket the next time you go shopping.  entrees range from $15-30.

vidalia

m st., n.w.

washington, d.c.

smackers.

noteworthy.  food with southern accent.

interesting.  absolutely amazing!  among the top 3 d.c. restaurants i've been to.  why in the seafood section?  well, amy and i had exceptionally well-prepared seafood.  every detail is accounted for, from rosemary flavored ice tea to the bit of apple cider in my sweetened iced tea, vidalia is a must for those serious about food.

snob appeal.  high.

patrons.  older crowd, we were the youngest in the high-rolling bunch.

mackdaddy.  you know great food, can find it in an intimate atmosphere, and cozy up!

is it going to hurt?  bring your check book, visa card, and maybe some extra cash just in case - you'll be spending about $150 for a meal for two here, including drinks and tip.  don't say that i didn't warn you.

joe's stonecrabs

miami, florida

southbeach

smackers.

1/2

special mention.  derek meisner gets the credit for this one - his most favorite restaurant in the entire world delivers with flying colors.  if only his oceannaire pick worked out . . .

noteworthy.  world famous 80 year old restaurant serving stone crabs when in season.  fabulous side dishes, great service, extensive bar.

interesting.  you go for the stone crabs.

snob appeal.  none.

patrons.  everyone is here, from expense account executives to tourists in t-shirts and shorts.

mackdaddy.  you're the guy who knows where to eat in miami.  just like will smith.  if only your honey looked like jada.

is it going to hurt?  absolutely.  stone crabs (only the claws are served for all you san francisco/maryland natives used to eating the whole crab) run at the market price.  translated, a plate of "medium" claws, 8 in all, are $20; "selects" are $30; "larges" are $40; and "jumbos" are $70 (all servings are 1 lbs. so as the claws get larger, the number served are smaller).  dinner for 4, $400 (5 "mediums," 1 "select," 1 "large," creamed spinach, lyonaise potatoes, fried eggplant).

nobhill

mgm grand

las vegas, nevada

smackers.

noteworthy.  west cost style in the midst of a desert.  private glass enclosed rooms named after streets in san francisco.

interesting.  it's been a while since i've had a meal as good as the one i had here.  started with a foie gras sandwhich done up in a "french dip" interpretation - stunning.  lobster pot pie with a whole 2 1/2 pound lobster dished over a crisp crust?  it was so rich, that we had to wash it down with 3 bottles of wine (which the waiter had pulled off-the-list for us).  what else can be said for a restaurant that stocks peets coffee?

snob appeal.  high.  beautiful high-rollers abound.

patrons.  older crowd, we were the youngest in the high-rolling bunch.

mackdaddy.  can't show off your bling-bling any better than here.

is it going to hurt?  absolutely.  $1.2k for 7.  Ouch.
