sasabune

los angeles

sawtelle ave.

smackers.

\

noteworthy.  best sushi i've ever had.  the freshest fish and warmest rice.

interesting.  you don't get to choose what sushi you eat unless you tell the waiter what you don't want to eat.

snob appeal.  none.  it's trendy but real.

patrons.  diverse and young crowd:  loud talkers about how great their careers are going, how much money they're making; couples; sushi insiders; and first-time daters.

mackdaddy.  go here and you're instantly someone who knows sushi.  but, you really should know your sushi to appreciate this place.

is it going to hurt?  yes.  spent 2 hours here, 20 sushi plates, 3 sakes, 2 large kirins, 3 people . . . $220.

saka gura

midtown

new york

smackers.

noteworthy.  incredible hidden sake bar and "home-style" japanese food.

interesting.  finding your way there is the hard part.  saka gura is hidden in the basement of a nondescript commercial building in midtown.  after going through the lobby, you run down two flights of stairs (in a rather dingy environ), and open a door (adorned with a simple sign) to this absolutely stunning restaurant.  hundreds of premium sake; hard-to-find "homestyle" japanese food, definitely a departure for the standard sushi affair.

snob appeal.  none.

patrons.  japanese businessmen and business women and a few out-of-place stumblers (like me).

mackdaddy.  you're here, you're part of the yakuza

is it going to hurt?  yes.  the more you're here the more you want to drink and eat, so be careful.
