fusion

d.c. coast

washington d.c.

k street, n.w.

smackers.

noteworthy.  asian-fusion without the in-your-face "hey look i'm blending asian influences with ingredients you've never heard of."

interesting.  tea-smoked lobster.  great decor with an interesting bar scene.

snob appeal.  super-high.  there are a lot of attorneys eating here so, well, enough said.

patrons.  young professionals talking the talk, in their nice suits and six figure salaries.

mackdaddy.  lets your date know that you can take someone to a nice place.

is it going to hurt?  yes.  amy took me here for my birthday, appetizers, main course, dessert, wine . . . $150.

nobu

new york

hudson st.

smackers.

noteworthy.  japanese fusion with south american influences.  the major hook here is the former head chef is iron chef japanese, which of course, makes getting into this trendy restaurant extremely, extremely difficult.  i had to make reservations 2 months in advance, and even then, i couldn't eat at 7:30.

interesting.  omakase menu has three price-points, $100-120-140, and allows the chef to create dishes from whatever is fresh that day.  i decided on the $100 omasake menu and tasted about 6 different dishes.  highlights were:  kobe beef, soft shell crab, and super-fresh sushi (the taro was amazing).

snob appeal.  in the upper atmosphere.  dim lights in a neo-deconstructed forest.

patrons.  everyone is here, from the stars, businesspeople, and tourists who, like me, were lucky enough to get in.

mackdaddy.  great first impression, but you may be overdoing it.

is it going to hurt?  yes.  two people, $230.
